Technical Specs
Dr Logic Backup works with a client-server architecture. The client is installed on the Mac or PC that holds the data that needs to be backed up and communicates with the central server over the internet. Our service is powered by CrashPlan PRO software from Code 42.
The Dr Logic Backup Client
Java
Dr Logic Backup Client application is written in Java to enable cross-platform compatibility. It runs on Windows XP or greater, Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 and most popular flavors of Linux.
Runs in background
The application runs in the background and only demands user attention when it needs it and will not take priority over other running Programs. Additionally it will monitor
Encryption
All data is encrypted the moment it is read using 448-bit encryption on the client before it is sent to our server. The data is stored in it's encrypted format, meaning information can only be recovered using the password you set.
Compression
Data is compressed to save bandwidth and speed up transfers.
HTTPS
As a further precaution all communication between the client and the server is done through HTTPS. Using a standard, commonly used internet protocols maximizes compatibility with routers.
Continuous data protection
The software constantly monitors the filesystem for changes. When it detects a change the changed bytes within the file (i.e. not the whole file again) are backed up straight away. Backups can also be scheduled to run only during certain times of the day if desired.
Tweakable
All settings are available to the end user under the Advanced tab. For example you can set exactly how much internet bandwidth the software is allowed to use, or set how many incremental versions to keep.
Other features
- Unlimited Versioning
- Unlimited File Sizes
- Data De-duplication
- Multiple File Stream/Fork support
- Incremental/Delta at Block Level
- Data Integrity Verification and Healing
The Dr Logic Backup Server
XServe
We run Dr Logic Backup on Apple Xserves running Mac OS X Server. We use redundant power supplies and hard drives, all protected by UPSs (uninterruptable power supplies) and backup diesel power generators.
RAID Storage
Both the backup data and the operating system use RAID to protect from drive failures. Our storage systems use RAID 6 which allows 2 drives to per array fail without interrupting service. We use server-grade SATA drives throughout for reliability and performance.
Backup of the backup
Our backup systems are themselves backed up, meaning our system really is explosion proof!
Connection speed
We ensure that we always have more bandwidth than necessary so both backups and restores are super fast.
Data Centre
The servers are housed in a secure data centre in Central London.
